Don’t rely too heavily on editing

Your editing team will much appreciate it if your recording is as clean as possible. Plus, you won’t have to worry (as much) about technical problems and circumstantial issues arising. Instead, you can focus on your topic and give a great interview. Look for a quiet place

This one is pretty obvious but we are not only talking about shutting your bedroom door. There are a lot of things you can do to ensure an uninterrupted hour for your podcast in a place that makes your recording sound as crisp and clear as possible. Check out these tips to sound the best you can:  

When you choose the room you’ll be recording in, make sure it doesn’t produce echo or reverberation when you talk. Usually, rooms that are completely empty will make you sound echoey and affect the recording. You really don’t want to sound as if you were recording in a bathroom or a cave.

Choose a furnished room that’s far from outside noises. It’s also a good idea to avoid rooms with humming appliances like the AC, a washing machine, or the refrigerator. Some people recommend recording in your closet as clothes mitigate echo. But if your podcast interview includes video, we don’t think that’s a good idea. 

Other useful tips to ensure a quiet time are to let your family or roomies know you will be recording. Put up a “Recording. Please don’t knock” sign on your door or even on your doorbell, and of course, turn off your computer and phone’s notifications. You don’t want to be interrupted mid-sentence with a loud “DING!”

Have a local recording

Let’s just get it out there, Zoom recordings are not good enough. I know it might seem easier to use the audio from your Zoom call but it is a way better idea to have both participants record themselves separately. Zoom records both audios in the same channel leaving little room for editors to cut out mistakes and work their magic. While remote audio recording software exists, you’ll probably have to pay for it and the quality won’t be as good. 

Here’s how local recordings work: you have your normal zoom call but each person will have another device or software recording their voices separately. You can use everything from the most basic equipment like your phone, to an easy software like Audacity or Descript and a USB microphone. Of course, the quality can vary, it’s up to you and your budget to choose.

If it’s a one-time thing, use your phone, but if you are thinking about a long-term podcasting project, get yourself some equipment.

Local recordings are much easier to clean, edit and mix to create quality audio for your podcast. Plus, your audio engineer will thank you!

Use Headphones and start at the same time

There is a catch to local podcast recordings: always use headphones. It’s not only about the podcaster look (although anyone can look pretty neat in a headphone set), their purpose is to stop the other person’s audio from bleeding into your recording. Remember: You should only be recording your part of the conversation. 

Before you start the interview make sure that everyone has started their local recording, and clap to ensure easy synch when editing. It’s also a good idea to record the Zoom call just to have it as a backup if anything goes wrong. 

Avoid glitches, jumps, and other sounds

There are many reasons why you might get a glitchy recording of your voice, follow these tips to sound the best you can:

Slow internet connection can really ruin any remote recording. There is nothing worse than the robot voice followed by a complete disconnection. Make sure you pick the best spot to have a strong internet connection. If your podcast interview will only use audio, turn your video off for a smoother call. 

Another reason for jumpy audio involves your physical separation from your microphone. If you speak too closely the audio will get distorted, we’ll hear your mouth and breathing noises and your p’s and t’s will pop too loud. To avoid these annoying sounds keep a good fist-length from your microphone.

Also, be sure to position yourself in a way that you won’t knock your microphone over or hit it with your hands or your headphones cord!

Handling files and sending them

Lastly, after your interview is done, you’ll probably want to send the recording to either the host of the podcast or your audio engineer. We recommend you send the file in a .WAV format to make editing easier. If the file is too heavy to email you can use Google Drive, Dropbox, or even some free tools like WeTransfer

We also recommend not getting rid of the file until after the podcast has been released… just in case!

Directories update periodically, but they need the help of a host. Each time you publish something from your podcast hosting, it will reflect on Spotify, Apple Podcast, or wherever you listen.

But what is a host?

Well, a host is a platform that works as an intermediary between you and the directory. Hostings allow you to upload your audio file, choose your posting date, write show notes, add sponsors, etc. Plus, some hosting services will even show you analytics on your podcast’s performance!

You’ll need to find the hosting that better suits you and start from there. Add you artwork, your sho description and get started posting episodes!

Once it’s all uploaded to your hosting site, they’ll take care of sending it over to the directories. This is the easiest way to appear on all the streaming platforms. Some of these services are free and some others work with a subscription.

In Nodalab’s past blogposts, we have talked about different ways to build a community around your podcast. We know a podcast is a powerful tool to take your networking skills to the next level and strengthen your community. However, it is always better to choose your battles and keep your tribe close to you. So breath deeply and repeat after us: 

Take Your Time

By living in this accelerated and expeditious world, we have forgotten the elementary pieces of what human relationships are about: they take time, and we need to take care of them. If you have a podcast, and you are doing this only to make money or “living the dream” without caring for building any relationships, we invite you to rethink the purpose of your work. We all need other people in order to survive, and, other people can make a huge difference when it comes to expanding the reach of any professional project.

So what is the best way to connect with others through my podcast?

To create, grow and maintain a community around your podcast, you need to be patient and consistent with the content you are sharing. The universe wasn’t created in a day, and unless you are a famous person or a well known global leader, growing a podcast project will take time and effort from you. The more true connections you create with your audience and your podcast community, the less time it will take you to achieve your goals. 

What strategies can I implement to strengthen the audience around my podcast?

In order for your audience to grow, and stick with you anytime, you must show your listener that you care about them as much as they care about you. Some of the strategies you can put on practice to engage with your audience are:

Create and follow a publishing schedule

Creating a calendar with all the necessary tasks for the production and distribution of your podcast will give a concrete structure to your workflow, and will also guide your audience to be aware of when a new episode is ready for them. If you have a weekly podcast and you have been releasing episodes on Tuesdays for a while, it’s probably for the best to keep it that way. Also, it is important to prepare your audience for release day, so be sure to let them know one day before to stay tuned for every new show.  

Another important move is to respond to comments on your social networks and listen to constructive feedback from other podcasters, such as your audience. This shows you have sensitivity and reflect empathy. Despite what some people tell you, leaving reviews is important for podcasters because it is the clearest way to receive honest feedback from their audience. By adding the task “respond comments and feedback from the audience” to your to-do list and making it a habit, you will be building trust with your audience, and they will know they can count on you at all times.

This is a classic strategy from other podcasters to attract their audience. Whether is at the beginning or at the end of your podcast, don’t forget to invite your listeners to subscribe, and leave a review. You can also engage with your audience by asking questions in your show, request topics for the next episodes, or suggest some others and ask for feedback: this is another KPI for you to consider on your content schedule. After all, you are making a show for them, not for you.

In our current time and space, the efficiency by which we get our work done has accelerated significantly thanks to the latest technological advancements.

Here is some good news about podcast automation as a couple: there are dozens of tools we can use to optimize workflows and delegate tasks to computers. Thanks to automation, we can run our podcast production like an assembly line and get the job done with minimal effort.

Better planning leads to better results. You can implement multiple strategies to streamline your production workflow and increase your productivity. If you plan carefully, you can reduce the number of clicks it takes you to finish all your tasks.

So why are clicks killing you, or at least making you slower?

Shortcuts

Have you ever seen a programmer work on a computer? Then, you must have noticed the power of keyboard shortcuts in any laborious task. It’s amazing to see how quickly you can move around a computer when you avoid using your mouse. And while practice plays a huge role in the development of these skills, learning one keyboard shortcut a day will eventually lead you to walk the path of least resistance. We recommend you to do some research and find out which shortcuts can minimize your effort on producing your podcast.

Organizing yourself better to keep track of all your files and save not only time but, loads of money. According to CEO Buddy, some companies spend from 2,000 to 6,000 dollars each year on reordering files and folders, and this doesn’t include the frustration and constant mess that is generated as time passes. Our advice is to have at least 2 folders for each podcast episode, one where you keep your raw files and one where you keep your files ready for publishing. Trust us on this one; having to search around for every file while uploading to every outlet is simply inefficient.

Templates

Having templates ready for your media and assets (audio files, images, videos), scripts, episode descriptions, as well as social media and blog posts, is an essential tool in any serious production. This provides you with a sense of order and a strong structure for every episode. It is not necessary to produce every episode from scratch, as this task would be very repetitive and time-consuming. Usually, the podcast structure is similar for every episode, so if you need to change or add details to future episodes, you can always make updates on your current templates.

Finally, the last piece of the puzzle is to use automation for every task that doesn’t require human interaction. Think about every time you move a file or a piece of information from one place to another, only so one member of your team can review and approve it, and then save it on a separate hard drive or cloud storage service of their own. Does this feel like a waste of time, space and energy? Well, unfortunately, it is. Thankfully enough, there is a solution to this problem and it will make your life much easier.

Automation can be achieved through online services that link between your applications and your webpage, such as Zapier, or by a dedicated software to handle operations within your Operating System, such as Automator. You can schedule tasks on your computer, move files and send text messages or emails without blinking an eye. And while setting up every procedure may be time-consuming at first, it doesn’t compare to the relief of knowing that you will save so much energy to focus on the things that truly matter!

However, establishing clear communication lanes with your team members and developing a structured plan will make things easy peasy. To create a roadmap according to your project’s needs, we recommend you to set quantifiable goals and objectives that you want to reach through your podcast.
